Best $5 Lunch Contest

Mongolian Barbecue eatery named No. 1

They went head to head about parking, prices and portions, and when the smoke cleared on the battle scene, the field of 10 had been wiped of all but one contender in Get Out's Best $5 Lunch Contest: YC's Mongolian Barbecue (3206 S. McClintock Drive, Tempe) stood alone, victorious.

Judges Cindy Muhleman of Scottsdale, Mark Hatfield of Tempe and Monique Decker of Gilbert awarded 92 out of a possible 99 points to YC's, which also has restaurants at 9120 E. Indian Bend Road, Scottsdale, and 9620 Metro Parkway West, Phoenix.

The restaurant offers an all-you-can-cram-into-one-bowl special for less than $5. Diners select meats, vegetables, noodles and sauces, then turn the bowls over to cooks for grilling.

Hatfield praised the restaurant's friendly service, Decker pointed out that "making the stir-fry was nearly as fun as eating it," and Muhleman enjoyed her lunch so much she returned with her family for dinner.

And although those three (and the friend of their choice) ate lunch for 10 weeks straight on Get Out's tab, they still weren't the big winners. That honor goes to Marianne Creed of Ahwatukee, who was one of two people who nominated YC's as the best $5 lunch in the Valley. Since Creed nominated the restaurant that received the highest score, she wins a free weekend for two at Marriott's Mountain Shadows Resort in Scottsdale.
